Why this guide

This guide has been produced because gay men engaged in chemsex/ chems, or in recovery, say they

• do not fully understand how (support) services work
• are uncertain how to access support, and/ or
• do not receive the support they need

It has also been produced to illustrate how services and emergency systems function, and outline what you might reasonably expect using them. We don’t believe a guide like this has been produced before. It’s a first edition.

The flipside of chems can be isolating and you may not have sufficient head space to use this guide. However, we’ve broken information down into bite-sized pieces so you can dip into it when need. Alternatively, consider going through it with a friend or professional.

It’s not your fault
The ideal of a connected and easily navigable healthcare system contrasts sharply with the often bewildering reality. It's only when you're vulnerable and seeking support that the disjointed pathways become apparent, adding undue stress to an already difficult situation. This is a systemic failure, not a personal one.

We know some services are trying to work better together to provide tailored and integrated support—though finding the right help can still be complicated and frustrating. Of course, all health services aim to be welcoming, respectful, knowledgeable, and understanding; the thing is to find a service that’s right for your needs. 

Going the extra mile
We recognise the extraordinary staff who navigate healthcare systems on our behalf. Many find ways to ‘work around’ these systems, while others plough through, also forging relationships with colleagues and peers across disciplines to provide the care and support we need.
