Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and Crystal Meth Anonymous (CMA) are free, volunteer‑run mutual‑aid fellowships that follow the Twelve‑Step programme:

  • AA focuses on alcohol
  • NA covers any drug, including prescription meds and alcohol if the member chooses
  • CMA addresses crystal meth

CMA says its “meetings are open to anyone who feels they have a problem with crystal meth, and any other mind altering substances. Anyone may attend one of our meetings, regardless of age, race, sexual identity, creed, gender, religion, or lack of religion” (though its Twelve Steps mentions God six times which will suit some but not others). First names only are used and confidentiality is expected. You don’t need to call or register in advance, so please feel welcome to just come along to a meeting.”

Meetings can feel raw, and you may hear harrowing life stories. That raw honesty is the point but some find it challenging or off‑putting.

We have heard stories from gay men who have not felt welcome, facing heteronormative language and assumptions, micro‑aggressions from group members and straight participants who can find it hard to relate to crystal use to enhance sex. However, we also know some groups are explicitly LGBT+ inclusive such as Soho LGBTQ+ NA, NA Queer to Stay, LGBTQ Chair and Clean & Queer in Dalston. The important thing is to find support that’s right for you.
