Condoms with water-based or silicone-based lube help protect you and your partner(s) against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) – every time you get fucked or fuck. Condoms, or something resembling them, have been around for thousands of years and have been made out of all sorts of materials such as horn, tortoise shell (for that extra sensitive, gentle touch), oiled paper, linen, animal gut and leather.
From the mid-19th century, rubber condoms were thick, washable and reusable. The arrival of latex condoms in the 1920s made it possible to produce thinner, stronger, disposable condoms.
More recently, polyurethane condoms have provided a latex-free alternative. They can be thinner, although whether you feel more is a matter of personal preference. Polyurethane condoms can be used with oil-based lubricants, but latex and polyisoprene condoms cannot. Always check the packaging!
