Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)
PEP is a course of medication after a potential exposure to HIV to reduce the risk of HIV infection. It’s the same medication used to treat HIV.
The course lasts 28 days and may be able to prevent you becoming infected with HIV if you start taking it within 72 hours from the time of exposure, e.g., a condom break or unprotected/ bareback sex.
If you think you may need PEP don’t spend 72 hours searching the Internet for the right advice as the right advice is to go to a sexual health clinic now. The sooner you start treatment the more likely its success.
You can also obtain PEP at some accident and emergency departments (A&E), especially important at weekends because most sexual health clinics are closed.
