SELF CARE
We are the way
Recovery or change from chems can be incredibly challenging, but it also offers a chance for a more positive and fulfilling future. The struggle often stems from the deep physical and psychological hold chems can have, and gay men can find themselves caught in cycles of dependence, leading to feelings of shame, isolation, and despair.
Breaking free or making change can involve overcoming intense cravings, facing underlying mental health issues, and dealing with trauma or emotional wounds. For some, it’s also about coming to terms with cultural legacies about who we are as gay men, how we identify, and our sense of community. This is tough life stuff.
Above all, recovery brings opportunities for growth and change whether through safer chems use, in person support, de-tox, therapy, and/ or groups. It’s a journey that takes time and effort, but we can rebuild relationships, rediscover their sense of purpose, and feel more connected to ourselves and others.
