HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Health and wellbeing building blocks

While we all understand the basics of a healthy, balanced life, putting in the work and following it through can seem daunting. However, the building blocks that support health and wellbeing have never really changed:

  • Maintain a balanced diet
Focus on whole foods, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats while reducing processed foods and sugar.
  • Stay physically active
Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate weekly exercise, including cardio, strength training, and flexibility exercises.
  • Stay hydrated and get enough sleep
Drink plenty of water and aim to get 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night. Avoid ‘doomscrolling’ before bed - it can disrupt your rest and make it harder to switch off.
  • Prioritise mental well-being
This can include stress management, yoga, mindfulness, and seeking health support when needed. In the first instance, perhaps reach out to a friend or phone a helpline.
  • Safer drug use
Use recreational drugs consciously, not casually. Be aware of your vulnerability to dependency and addiction. Regularly test your ability to stop using by taking a break. Keep an eye on developing patterns and ask for help before there’s a problem, even if it’s just a chat with a friend.
  • Safer sex and being proactive
While never pleasant, STIs are an ‘occupational hazard’. Being sexually healthy is about prevention and dealing with problems as they arise. Build yourself a toolbox with regular STI testing, PrEP, condoms, PEP, vaccinations, and prompt sexual health clinic visits.
  • Stay connected
Maintain friendships and relationships, engage with the community, and seek social support for emotional well-being.
